TVS - Diodes

A TVS Diode, or Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) Diode, is an electronic device which is designed to protect against voltage spikes, such as those experienced in power problems or data line glitches. These devices work by providing a low impedance path to ground in the event of an overvoltage condition. This quickly discharges the excess voltage and prevents it from reaching the protected device. In addition to providing protection from damage, TVS Diodes can also be used to protect sensitive electronic components from random or gradual degradation due to cumulative exposure to high voltages.

The 3KASMC30HE3_A/H is a packaged two-stage, Uni-directional low-capacitance transient voltage suppressor diode. It features a low leakage current (1.2nA Max) to ensure minimal voltage drops across the protected lines. It is designed to protect against lightning related transient surges larger than 50V as well as voltage transients such as ESD. It features a low junction-to-case capacitance (CJ=0.25nF) for fast response time and low propagation delay. Its quick turn-off time (<1ns) allows it to be used in high-speed applications as well.

The device has a two-stage clamping algorithm to ensure maximum protection and minimal power dissipation. In the first stage, the device limits the excess voltage using an NPN diode-transistor structure until the voltage is significantly reduced to acceptable levels. In the second stage, the device clamps the remaining voltage using a pair of matched avalanche breakdown clamps. This allows the device to suppress voltage transients on a wide range of voltage magnitudes without causing significant power dissipation.

The device is primarily used for lightning strike protection and ESD protection in consumer-grade electronic products such as cellular phones, digital cameras, and other similar electronic devices. It can also be used in data signal lines and power lines in industrial and commercial environments to provide transient protection from lightning strikes and power supply glitches.
