3KP18C is a surface mount transient voltage suppressor, widely used in TVS - Diodes applications for boosting protection of electronic components from high-voltage surges. This device is designed to provide superior clamping performance to meet the requirements of demanding industrial and automotive environments.

3KP18C is a dual-piece Surface Mount Device (SMD) packaged in a 3.2mm² chip package with approximately 5.2mm long lead legs. This SMD has a reverse-state diodes characteristic. The device has a low capacitance of around 0.27pF and a rated reverse stand­off voltage of 18V, which enables the device to be used in low-voltage applications. The device also features breakover voltage protection, which helps protect electronic components from voltage surges and electrical spikes.

The working principle of 3KP18C TVS - Diodes can be better understood when studied through its three distinct modes of operation. The first mode of operation is the forward bias operation. During this mode, the device is activated by applying a sufficient amount of positive voltage to the anode terminal of the device. This causes the electrical field created by the applied voltage to penetrate through the device and into the reverse biased region, where electrons can flow from the cathode to the anode and provide current to the circuitry.

The second mode of operation is the reverse bias operation. This occurs when the voltage applied to the device is negative. During this mode, the electric field created by the applied voltage creates a depletion region within the device, blocking the flow of current. The third mode of operation is the breakover operation. This occurs when the applied voltage is higher than the reverse stand­off voltage of the device. Under this condition, current can flow through the device and provide extreme levels of protection to the connected equipment.
