40.709 Application Field and Working Principle

The European Commission standard 40.709 defines the limits for gain asymmetry and adjacent channel interference imposed on terrestrial broadcast transmitters intended to be used for television broadcasting services. This standard serves as a criteria for gaging the performance and efficiency of all types of broadcast television equipment. According to EN 300 196-1, these television broadcasting transmitters, used for the VHF, UHF, and higher frequency bands, must not exceed a defined gain imbalance or produce more than a certain amount of adjacent channel interference.

The 40.709 code specifies that for Terrestrial television transmitters, peak powers and peak flux pressures should be given to provide an indication of how the transmitter behaves when operating at peak output. A peak power is defined as the maximum peak power of the RF waveform of a given signal, while peak flux pressure is the maximum peak power of the average power of the RF waveform of the same signal in a certain size area.

The 40.709 standard also states that gain imbalances must not exceed a certain limit, and the transmission of telecommunication operators to receive equivalent signal levels must also comply with this limiting factor. Additionally, according to 40.709, adjacent channel interference must not exceed a certain limit when a broadcasting station is transmitting. Intermodulation products in adjacent channels must not exceed certain artificial levels.

The 40.709 code also drastically limits other interfering products in the frequency domain. The specified requirements for production of spurious emission includes – Low level spurious emission that is not to exceed 10 micro-volts, High level spurious emission that must not exceedp-p -20 dBm specified equivalent spurious flux density that needs to be not more than 2.6 μV/m,permitted set of spurious component frequencies, and in-channel modulation requirements to further improve the clarity of transmission.

The 40.709 standard controls the interference information within a given transmission area in order to ensure that no transmission exceeds a pre-specified level. This standard also allows for harmonization of power levels of different transmissions and provides guidance for the most effective and consistent way to reduce interference. In this manner, the 40.709 application field and working principle is used to regulate and control a wide range of terrestrial broadcasting operations across Europe.
