They consist of a light-emitting diode (LED) placed next to a phototransistor. This LED emits light that triggers the phototransistor, generating an electrical signal in the process.

The 4N33S(TA)-V optoisolator is a transistor-photovoltaic output optoisolator that is used to isolate input signals from possible electrical interference.
