TVS Diodes, commonly known as Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS), are specialized diodes designed to protect sensitive electronics from voltage spikes and surges. The 5.0SMLJ15CA-TP is a unidirectional, low-capacitance transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode for protecting high-speed data interfaces from transient voltage disturbances. This device has an extremely low capacitance of 1.5pF and is suitable for ESD protection on sensitive I/O interfaces such as USB, HDMI and DisplayPort.

Application Field

5.0SMLJ15CA-TP TVS diodes are designed primarily for ESD protection high-speed data interfaces like USB 2.0, USB 3.1, HDMI, DisplayPort and most other similar interfaces. It is also suitable for protecting sensitive electronics from overvoltage conditions that can occur due to overcharge of batteries, switching transients, or due to overvoltage conditions occurring within the circuit itself. This device can also be used in automotive systems to protect against voltage surges and transients typically occurring in harsh environments.

Working Principle

When a voltage spike or surge occurs on the protected data line, the 5.0SMLJ15CA-TP TVS diode can effectively block the excess voltage and clamp it to a safe level. This is achieved through the use of a Zener diode connected in series with a resistor, as shown in the figure below. The diode is set at a reverse breakdown voltage which is designed to limit the voltage to a safe level. The resistor limits the current when the diode is conducting, helping protect the device from electrical overstress. This combination of the diode and resistor is known as a voltage-clamping circuit.

When the voltage on the protected data line exceeds the reverse breakdown voltage of the Zener diode, the diode turns on and starts conducting current. This reduces the voltage on the data line back to a safe level, thus protecting the electronics from an electrical overstress event.

In addition to its ESD protection capabilities, the 5.0SMLJ15CA-TP TVS diode is designed to protect sensitive electronics from overvoltage conditions as well. Its low capacitance ensures that it does not affect the high-speed data signals, while its fast response time (as low as 1ns) helps protect the electronics from fast-rising voltage transients.
