Working Principle
When positive overvoltage occurs on the P-side, the 5.0SMLJ16A-TP absorbs the excess current, thus protecting any other parts in the system. Similarly it is able to absorb the excess current when negative overvoltage occurs on the N-side. As the 5.0SMLJ16A-TP absorbs the excess current, its PN junction voltage will be increasing. When the junction voltage is higher than its breakdown voltage, electrical conduction takes place. When the overvoltage situation is removed, the PN voltage of the diode will begin to decline. The current conducted by the diode is inversely proportional to the PN voltage, thus the current will decrease until it is brought to its leakage value. In this way, the 5.0SMLJ16A-TP is able to protect the system from overvoltage transients.
The 5.0SMLJ16A-TP is able to provide a reliable protection from overvoltage because of its wide-range of breakdown voltages. It has a breakdown voltage of 5V, which is sufficient protection in the majority of the applications.
