Fixed inductors, also known as chokes, are electronic components that store electrical energy in the form of a magnetic field when an alternating electric current passes through them. The stored energy is then released back into the circuit when the current stops. An inductor is essentially a coil of wire with a core material, typically ferromagnetic, located inside. This is to increase the magnetic field strength and consequently the inductor\'s value. The 5731 inductor is specifically designed for applications in high-frequency power circuitry, and also finds use in DC-to-DC converters, bridge circuits, circuit filtering, level shifting circuits, rectifiers and many other applications. It functions by limiting current through the inductor while passing a high-frequency current from one side to the other. The two sides of the inductor can be either AC or DC, as long as the applied current is of sufficiently high frequency.In terms of the physical construction of the 5731, the core material within the inductor is made up of thousands of turns of wound wire. When a high-frequency alternating current is passed through the inductor, the magnetic field created due to the core material induces a current opposite to the one passed, which opposes the direction of the current. This current is then stored in the inductor, and can be released when the applied current stops. This principle is known as Lenz\'s Law, which states that an electric current in a conductor creates a magnetic field that exerts a force on other current carriers in the conductor, opposing their motion. The principle of operation is simple - by limiting the current through the inductor it allows high frequency current to pass through which is then stored in the inductor, thereby providing a current limitation on the circuit. The primary forms of energy loss in a 5731 are due to heat and winding resistance. As the magnetic field changes, it has to go through a rapid reversal, leading to energy losses in the form of heat. The winding resistance of the inductor reduces the current, leading to further energy losses. To minimize this, proper voltages must be applied to the inductor, and proper selection of core material and winding wire must be done.Overall, the 5731 inductor is a simple device that finds many applications in power circuitry. It can function both as an inductor, storing energy in the form of a magnetic field, and as a current limiter, allowing high-frequency currents to pass while slowing down stronger currents. In terms of construction, it comprises a ferrite core and a coil of wire. Different types of ferrite core material must be chosen depending on the application requirements, and proper voltages must be applied to minimize resistance and heating losses.
