The concept of fuses is rooted in the early 19th century. Initially, they were made from lengths of rope that would burn out in the event of a power surge, thus protecting electrical components and ensuring safe operation. In the years since, advances in material and design have refined the fuse into a small, durable and reliable element in any electrical system. The use of fuses comes in two distinct forms, known as 5ET and 5 applications.
5ET fuses are designed for permanent installation in electrical systems at the point of service, usually just ahead of the main panel. These fuses are designed to monitor and regulate the overall power draw and are particularly well suited for use in outdoor equipment and electrical systems where high voltage current can pose a safety risk. Fuses designed for this purpose are typically rated at 125, 250, 400, 600 and up to 1200 amps, and are made with robust materials such as copper. The standard 5ET fuse is a cylinder shape with a wire fuse element inside. The wire element is encased in a ceramic or porcelain base that helps provide insulation from heat. The element inside the fuse conducts current and will break the circuit when the current is higher than its design rating.
The 5 application field for fuses is found primarily in electronic equipment, where top-quality fuses can provide precise current control and high precision manufacturing. Electronic equipment, often described as ‘mission critical’, relies upon the reliable performance of its components, and the use of fuses helps make sure that components as small as computer chips are properly protected. For such applications, smaller fuses are used, usually rated at five, ten, twenty-five and such amp ratings, and they are often supplied in special multi-pole fuse holders or strip sockets. 5 application fuses are typically made of materials other than copper, such as aluminum or cold-rolled steel, and often feature an engineered design that provides an extra level of reliability and fault tolerance.
The working principle of 5ET and 5 fuse systems is relatively simple. When a device or item is connected to the power supply, electrical current passes through the fuse, sensed by the wire element inside. When the current exceeds the design rating of the fuse, the heat generated melts the wire element, thus breaking the circuit and preventing further current from passing. Once the circuit has been broken, the fuse must be replaced: normally the entire device that the fuse was meant to protect must be disconnected in order for the replacement to be done safely.
In summary, fuses are an essential component of any electrical system, and are designed in two distinct form factors, 5ET and 5, for different applications. 5ET fuses are intended for use in permanent installations, while 5 application fuses are found in smaller electronic equipment that needs precise current control. The underlying principle behind fuses is the same, to prevent current overload, potentially resulting in serious damage to equipment. With their distinct designs and materials, fuses are well suited to monitor and regulate the power draw from both large and small electronic components, and thus play a critical role in keeping the people who use them safe.
