This gives it a “clamping” effect, diverting the surge away from the vulnerable components. During an ESD event, the current will increase rapidly and then eventually decay.

In addition to ESD protection, the 5KP33-B can also be used for over-voltage protection. When the device is exposed to voltages that exceed its operating limits, it will “clamp” the voltage to its maximum operating value. This prevents damage to the protected components and extends their life.
