TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are designed to protect electronic circuits from voltage transients, most of which are caused by the natural environment such as electrostatic discharge (ESD), lightning strikes and other high energy phenomena. The 5KP36CA-G TVS diode is a robust, small-signal device that can tolerate up to a 42V transient working voltage. In order to make it more suitable for customer needs, its ultra-fast response time of 1.5 ns make this device perfectly suitable for providing protection against surge failure. It has a non-directional clamping and can easily meet the standards specified in ESD and surge protection.
The 5KP36CA-G is designed in a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) processes which gives it an advantage over the other diodes due to its very low on-state resistance values. This leads to a higher power handling capability and greater surge current capability. The ultra-low capacitance of the diode gives it a very low leakage current that results in high hold-off performance.
The working principle of 5KP36CA-G is quite simple. It functions as a bidirectional protection device that has two electrodes, the anode and the cathode. When a transient has a greater than breakdown voltage applied to it, it will generate a current which, since it doesn’t pass through a resistor, is unrelieved and thus causes a clamping force on the device. The advantage of this is that the 5KP36CA-G is able to protect an entire system from making contact with the source of the transient. The device then ts on the current, directing the excessive surge energy to ground and creating a safe environment while preventing any damage to the system.
The 5KP36CA-G is most suitable for use where low-to-medium power applications are involved. These include every day applications such as the protection of power supplies, printed circuit boards, I/O ports, telecom, multimedia and computer peripherals. It is also a great choice for industrial control panels and external peripheral components from voltage transients. With its fast response feature, it works just as effectively on low capacitive circuits and I/O lines as on high capacitive loads.
