A Transient Voltage Suppression Diode (TVS) is one of the most important components used in modern electronic designs, as it provides protection against transient and over-voltage events caused by lightning strikes, inductive switching, electrostatic discharge, and other external occurrences, as well as power ringing and ground bounce. The 5KP51-B, a member of the 5KP series of unidirectional TVS Diodes from Littelfuse, offers a robust and reliable form of protection against high-energy transients.

The 5KP51-B TVS Diode is packaged in a 6.30mm (0.248") axial leaded typology and has a maximum peak pulse power rating of 350W @ 8/20μs surge, meanwhile featuring a 485V peak pulse standoff voltage. It is designed to limit transient voltages by responding very quickly to decreasing surge voltages and by rapidly shunting away excessive energy. Its epoxy-filled glass body provides superior insulation to prevent electric current leakage and its low- temperature characteristic ensures superior performance in a variety of operating temperature environments.

The 5KP51-B is a true unidirectional component that offers reliable and efficient protection against surges. It has a peak pulse current rating up to 3A and low clamping voltage of 7.0V whilst helping to protect valuable electronic equipment from destruction due to high-energy transient occurrences. This device also displays a wide operating temperature range of -55ºC to +125ºC. The 5KP51-B is ideal for protecting relatively sensitive applications such as LED lighting, digital and sensitive analogue circuits, personal computers, telecoms equipment, and a variety of other applications in the automotive, industrial, telecoms, and consumer markets.

The 5KP51-B TVS Diode offers fast response times, excellent clamping capability, proven reliability, and excellent surge handling capability. It is also RoHS compliant and halogen-free. The working principle of a TVS diode involves a semiconductor with a high junction capacitance. This junction capacitance decreases when the voltage applied to the diode increases. When a sharp increase in the supply voltage occurs due to a transient event, the junction capacitance acts to limit the rise in voltage by discharging the excess energy in the form of a current between the anode and cathode.

The 5KP51-B device operates over a wide working voltage range and absorbs the excess energy from the supply in order to protect the device. This is known as its clamping action, where the voltage rises and then is held at a certain level until the transient voltage dissipates. This allows the device to respond and protect the application within a very short response time. By clamping the voltage back down, the energy absorbed is dissipated as the current passes through the diode, which ultimately extinguishes the transient event.

The 5KP51-B is a versatile device that provides outstanding protection against degrading factors such as transient voltages.
