TVS diodes are used in a variety of applications as an electrical protection device. The 5KP78 is a type of transient-voltage suppression diode, originating from the tireless work of Taiwan Semiconductor, which works to protect sensitive electronics from sudden voltage transients. 5KP78 is designed to provide surge protection on direct lines up to 600W peak power, making it perfect for protecting against system malfunctions, lightning strikes and other transients.

The most important function of TVS diodes is overvoltage protection, which involves diverting possible overvoltage away from sensitive components on a circuit board. 5KP78 achieves this function by stimulating conduction when the voltage of the line or load exceeds the clamping voltage. The anode and cathode electrodes provide a high-impedance current path, providing for a high-energy, low-inductance surge. This combination of a MOV and electrode electrodes makes the 5KP78 well suited to protecting high-current circuits and sensitive components.

The 5KP78 also has a fast response time, which is important for transient surge protection as it must be able to respond quickly in order to prevent excessive damage to components.
