63662-2 is an international standard which specifies the requirements for one-wire screw-in connectors, sometimes referred to as magnetic wire connectors (MDCs). The connectors feature snap-in latching mechanisms and are primarily used in industrial automation systems for the rapid connection and disconnection of electrical power, data, and signal connections. Additionally, 63662-2 compliant MDCs can also be used for wiring in electronic circuits, for quick assembly of test equipment, and for making and repairing points within point-to-point connections.
63662-2 compliant MDCs are available in four different sizes. Each size is designed to satisfactorily perform at different voltage ratings and conductor sizes. They are built using both plastic and metal housings in a variety of colours. During operation the housing material prevents any electrical shock hazards and keeps the connection watertight. Additionally, each connector is mechanically keyed so that it can only be connected with mating connectors.
To install a 63662-2 compliant MDC, an operator sets the contact powdering point into the terminal housing, and then inserts the appropriate conductor into the printed hole. Next, the metal screw is tightened using a 2.5 mm hex screwdriver. Secure connection is ensured as the conductor is clamped to the contact point in an efficient manner.
In order to disconnect an MDC, the operator simply turns the screwdriver counter-clockwise to loosen the screw and then releases the latch mechanism. This mechanism holds the connector inside the terminal at the same time as the connection remains secure.
The 63662-2 compliant MDCs have many advantages over traditional screw-in connectors such as solderless connection and rigorous environmental testing. Additionally, the connectors feature a simple and robust design and are capable of withstanding higher temperatures and vibration forces, thereby reducing maintenance time and costs.
