The 650R-21ILF is a universal Clock/Timing Frequency Synthesizer chip used to generate frequency and time operations.
The 650R-21ILF is a Low Noise ADSL Chipset Clock/Timing solution specifically designed for driving xDSL modems. It is designed to generate programmable output frequencies from 1 to 166 MHz for the Downstream and from 1 to ½ the Downstream frequency for the Upstream.
The 650R-21ILF is typically used for Modem applications in the Telecommunications industry, however, the 650R-21ILF can also be used for other Clock/Timing applications including clock multiplication, frequency multiplication, and jitter cleaning.
The 650R-21ILF is extremely easy to integrate, however a basic understanding of the features and workings of the chip are needed to get the best performance out of it.
Application Field
The 650R-21ILF is used to generate a wide variety of frequencies that are used in all sorts of applications, including communications, broadcast and multimedia, instrumentation, and industrial automation. The 650R-21ILF facilitates adjusments in order to generate higher frequencies with low jitter to accurately and reliably drive Clock/Timing signals. As such, it is suitable for applications requiring high frequency and accurate time-domain management such as networks, servers, storage systems, and video/audio streaming.
Working Principle
The 650R-21ILF’s clock synthesizer / generator consists of four major modules: Phase-Locked Loop (PLL), Voltage-Controlled Oscillator (VCO), Filter, and Interpolator-Mixer. The first module - the PLL - is the most important one. It contains the phase detector, loop filter, voltage-controlled oscillator, divider and locks the output frequency based on the reference frequency.
The phase detector compares the two input signals (reference and feedback) and measures the phase difference. If these two signals are phase synchronous, then the output of the phase detector is zero, and the phase synchronism is maintained. However, if these two signals are out-of-phase, then the phase detector will output a signal that drives the VCO to correct the phase difference.
The VCO then produces an output frequency which is proportional to the input signal it receives from the phase detector. This frequency is then divided by a divider and fed back to the phase detector as a reference signal, thus creating a continuous cycle of phase comparison and adjustment of the output frequency according to the reference signal.
The filter module is used to clean up any phase noise present in the output frequency. The Interpolator-Mixer is used to generate higher frequency outputs with low jitter by mixing two different frequencies and outputting the mixed frequency. This mixed frequency can be much higher than the input frequencies.
These four modules work together to allow the 650R-21ILF to accurately generate frequencies ranging from 1 to 166MHz with low jitter for xDSL modems and other Clock/Timing applications.
