Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors:

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are electrical components capable of storing electrical energy, providing stablizing effects in controlling circuit parameters. Made from aluminum, these capacitors are made up of two plates separated by aluminum oxide between them. The oxide layer acts as a dielectric, enabling electrical energy to be stored across its surface. Application Field

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are well-suited for high-voltage applications, typically ranging from as low as 6V to as high as 1200V, with some examples as high as 4000V. As a result, it is an ideal choice for a variety of applications including AC and DC energy storage, audio and video signal processing, power-rail decoupling, and power regulation. It is possible to attain up to several farads of capacitance for usage in power supply applications. Additionally, these capacitors are highly reliable and have a long life span.

Working Principle

An electrolytic capacitor functions by storing charge within its dielectric; when an electric potential is applied to the plates, a current is passed between them. The aluminum plates are coated with a solid-state oxide, acting as a dielectric between the two plates, further enhancing their ability to store charge. More charge can be stored due to the high dielectric constant of aluminum oxide. To increase the amount of charge that can be stored, a liquid electrolyte can be used instead of a solid-state oxide.

When an electric potential is applied across the two plates, an electric current will pass between them and result in a charge imbalance; this charge imbalance creates a new electric field within the capacitor, whose intensity increases with the applied electric potential. This electric field generates a force which pulls the charge onto the opposite plate and stores it there. Charge redistribution continues until a steady state is reached, and with it, a steady state electric field.

The greater the difference between the two plates, the more charge that will be stored within it. The total amount of charge stored within an electrolytic capacitor is determined by its dielectric material and the magnitude of the electric potential applied. When capacitors of this type are connected in series, it is possible to achieve even greater levels of capacitance, enabling them to hold more charge.
