Tantalum-Polymer CapacitorsTantalum-polymer capacitors are a class of capacitors that combine two distinct types of capacitors: a tantalum electrolytic capacitor and a capacitor made from a thin sheet of polymer electrolyte material. The combination of these two capacitor types allows for the use of higher capacitance and higher voltage ratings than tantalum electrolytic capacitors can provide on their own. The structure of the tantalum-polymer capacitor is similar to that of a traditional tantalum electrolytic capacitor. An anode layer of tantalum is deposited on an anode substrate and another layer of tantalum is deposited on top of the anode layer. The anode and cathode halves are then separated by a thin sheet of polymer electrolyte material.The primary benefit of combining tantalum with a polymer electrolyte is that the result introduces increased flexibility in capacitor size and voltage rating. Additionally, the polymer electrolyte helps to provide superior electrical characteristics, including high volumetric efficiency, low equivalent series resistance (ESR), high ripple current and high frequency performance. The anode layer provides an increased level of robustness to the capacitor due to its superior stability and mechanical and thermal properties compared to other types of capacitors.For the 6TPE120MAZB, the application field includes DC to DC converters in notebook computers, mobile phones and other portable electronic devices for which small, lightweight, high performing components are necessary.
