Tantalum - Polymer Capacitors refer to small, surface-mount capacitors which offer high capacitance in a small volume. Tantalum-polymer capacitors are particularly prized for their relatively large capacity for size, long shelf life, and low equivalent series resistance (ESR). The 6TPE220M is one of the most widely used tantalum-polymer capacitors available.
The 6TPE220M is a low profile, high capacitance polymer capacitor best suited for industrial (automotive, medical and consumer product) applications requiring high reliability and long-lifetime operation. The 6TPE220M offers very stable performance and high thermal endurance. It is rated at 220μF and operating voltage 25V (Max 33V). Since its maximum operating temperature is 125°C and its insulation resistance is 4.7GΩ, it is especially suitable for high temperature applications. It is available in three different case sizes: vertical C case, radial X case and surface-mount M case.
The two main components of the 6TPE220M are a metalized cathode and anodic polymer materials. At the core, metalized pure Tantalum powder is molded in an anodic polymer material. An anodic polymer material is an organic material with a large electric field strength which results in a very fast, sharp pulse charge or discharge capability. It also enables the capacitor to operate in harsh environments.
The working principle behind the 6TPE220M is based on electrostatics. This is analogous to the way a transformer works: electrostatic energy induces and oppositely charged voltage between the core and windings. With the 6TPE220M when a voltage is applied to the anode, a field begins to influence the metalized cathode. The capacitance between the two polarities increases as a result, creating a voltage that is higher than the supply voltage. This increase in capacitance is the basis for the 6TPE220M’s ability to store energy.
The 6TPE220M is well suited for use in memory backup circuits, ultracapacitor applications, low voltage supplies, and telecom/datacom applications. Its long shelf life and extra-low thermal impedance make it a fantastic choice for high temperature and other applications where capacitive output is necessary to power components.
