Temperature Sensors - NTC Thermistors

   NTC thermistors are temperature-sensitive, resistors which are produced from sintered semiconductor materials, and are used to measure temperature in a wide variety of applications such as automotive, HVAC/R, industrial, and consumer electronics. These thermistors have a negative temperature coefficient, meaning that as temperature increases, resistance decreases, making them especially useful for temperature measurement or temperature control. The 701030 is an NTC thermistor with a nominal resistance of 10 kohms and a tolerance of 5%, meaning that the actual resistance value may range between 9.5 to 10.5 kohms, depending on the changes in temperature.   These thermistors are usually constructed with a ceramic body, two wires, and an internal disc made of a semiconductive material with a heavy doping of either P or N type impurities. An NTC thermistor works by taking advantage of the fact that impurities, or dopants, in the ceramic material affect the mobility and concentration of carriers in the ceramic. When the temperature increases, the mobility of carriers also increases, resulting in a decrease of the resistance value of the thermistor. In temperature control applications, these thermistors are often placed in a control loop with a heater, and the temperature is controlled by monitoring the current passing through the thermistor.
