Common Mode Chokes

Common mode chokes are components used to reduce EMI (electromagnetic interference) and their applications are usually in fields with potential electromagnetic noise or where there is a need to raise signal levels. They are wide-band components and are normally employed with electrical circuit applications such as motor control, power amplifiers, switch-mode power supplies, audio equipment, electronic data links, and even medical devices.Common mode chokes operate when connected in series with an AC voltage source or between two different AC voltage sources. This is done to filter out wrong types of signals or harmful noise. It works through the principle of differential and common mode signals. Generally, differential and common mode signals form a two-wire communication systems which provides communication between two different AC circuits. Differential signals are “isolated” from common mode signals so that they can transmit only in one direction, whereas common mode signals circulate in both directions and will be interfered with noise or crosstalk. Common mode chokes are designed to reduce this crosstalk, and the degree of reduction is usually stated according to “impedance”.Impedance is the parameters which measures the degree of interference. Common mode chokes possess higher impedance than differential mode chokes. Usually, common mode chokes are of ferrite core design with high impedance characteristics irrespective of frequency. This is unlike the impedance characteristics of regular inductors which varies with frequency and is dependent on the physical characteristics of the inductor.Common mode chokes typically works by blocking the common mode current from flowing through the communication lines. The common mode current flows in equal and opposite directions within the two communication lines and results in an alternating magnetic field which causes interference to the communication channel. Common mode chokes act like a filter, blocking out the circulating common mode current and allowing the differential signal to pass through.There are several types of common mode chokes which can be used in different applications. For example, common mode chokes with planar cores, such as nanocrystalline cores, have higher reactance values than ferrite cores and can be used in applications where high voltage and current levels need to be balanced. They can also be used to reduce transformer core saturation issues in switch-mode power supplies.Common mode chokes are used not only to reduce noise but also to improve signal integrity. In data links, high-speed single-ended signal channels may require the usage of common mode chokes on each signal line to minimize reflections and crosstalk. Common mode chokes can also protect system components from high transients, spikes, and other forms of interference.In conclusion, common mode chokes are components which enable the suppression of unwanted signals and noise, and they are essential in various fields ranging from motor control to electronic data links.
