Introduction
The 74AC138PC is a 3-to-8 line decoder/demultiplexer which translates 3 binary address inputs on the A0 to A2 inputs into 8 mutually exclusive active low outputs on the Y0 to Y7 outputs. The 74AC138 is also characterized for operation over the full military temperature range of -55°C to 125°C. This device is “Edge” triggered and only works when a high-to-low transition is detected at the clock input.

Application Fields
The 74AC138PC has a wide range of applications and these applications vary from data acquisition and synchronization, telephone rings for security systems, network utility meters and back-lighting in liquid crystal displays (LCD). Decoders are used in rotary encoders to provide unique outputs for every unique combination of binary inputs and other applications require a change of the clock frequency in order to increase the accuracy of the system.

Working Principle
The 74AC138PC works by decoding 3 binary address inputs into 8 active low selectable outputs. The device is edge triggered, meaning it only works when there is a high-to-low transition detected at its clock input. In other words, the input line must transition from high-to-low in order for the decoder to switch one of its eight outputs.

The outputs of the 74AC138 can either be high or low. They are configured by setting the A0-A2 address pins to the desired combination. When the correct combination is applied, the output on the desired line will be active. The active low output can drive many low power applications like LEDs, relays, triacs and other small panels such as LCDs.

For example, when A0, A1 and A2 address pins are given as logic 0, 0 and 1 respectively, it will enable output Y2 and all other outputs are in low state. This is known as the active low operation of the decoder.
