The 74AC163TTR is a logic circuit divide-by-n counter, with 8-bit synchronous binary up/down counter that has a selectable divide-by-2, 4, 8, or 16 capability. It is a general-purpose device that is designed for use either as a frequency divider for applications where a divide-by-N function is desired, or as a frequency doubler if the application does not require division by an odd number. The 74AC163TTR is available in both plastic and ceramic packages, and is a good choice for optimizing board layouts, ease of fabrication, and cost.A divide-by-n counter is a logic circuit that takes an input clock signal and divides it by a predetermined number “N” to produce a slower out going clock signal as an output. A divide-by-N counter typically contains three components that are connected together in a circuit; an oscillator, a shift register, and a sequence counter. The oscillator generates the input clock signal that is to be divided. This signal is then fed into the shift register which stores and shifts the signal bits in order to count them. The sequence counter takes the signal from the shift register and counts the number of input signals. When the number of signals reaches the predetermined “N”, it sends an output signal. The output signal is then sent to the output terminal where it can be processed further.The 74AC163TTR is a CMOS synchronous binary counter that utilizes two separate clock inputs. The two clock inputs and the selectable divide-by-2, 4, 8, or 16 capability give the counter a wide range of application possibilities and make it a great choice for designing digital frequency dividers, dividers for motor speed control and other applications that require an exact frequency division technique. The 74AC163TTR has a high-speed transition and can divide the input frequency to create an output frequency that is one-half, one-fourth, one-eighth, or one-sixteenth of the input frequency depending on the control bits of the counter. It also includes an up/down control, a reset pin, and a clock enable pin in order to control the counter during the count sequence.The counter includes a data register and a decade decade count value register. The data register stores the data bits received from the input clock in order to process the data and to output the output signal. The count value register keeps track of the number of bits that have been processed and stores the output count value. The output count value is then outputted as an output signal from the counter.The 74AC163TTR is an excellent choice for applications that require a divide by-N counter.
