The 74AC191PC is a 4-Bit Synchronous Binary Counter with an Asynchronous Clear from Texas Instruments. It\'s a synchronous up/down counter which can be used to build larger modulo counters like decade counters or binary counters. The 74AC191PC is frequently used in applications such as synchronized rate multipliers, automatic interval timers, and process control. This composite counter is a combination of a 75191 synchronous counter IC, 101-74J3 3-input NAND gate, and 101-74A4 4-input NAND gates. It has synchronous up and down counting capability for both counting and data transfer applications.

At the heart of this counter is the 75191 synchronous up/down counter, which is a 13-pin device. It has 4 data inputs, a master reset input, two clock inputs (up and down clock) and three output pins. In asynchronous mode, when the up clock and down clock inputs are both high, the counter behaves as an asynchronous down counter and switches the outputs, when the up clock and down clock inputs are both low, the counter behaves as an asynchronous up counter, and switches the outputs. The master reset input resets the counter to an initial value (all zeros in binary).

The 101-74J3 3-input NAND gate is used to control the up/down count signals for the 75191 counter. It has three data inputs, a reset input, and two clock inputs (up and down clock). The down clock input is controlled by the 74A4 4-input NAND gates which are connected to the up/down count signals for the 75191 counter.

The 74AC191PC has two operating modes: asynchronous and synchronous. In asynchronous mode, when the up clock and down clock inputs are both low, the counter behaves as an asynchronous down counter and switches the outputs, when the up clock and down clock inputs are both high, the counter behaves as an asynchronous up counter and switches the outputs.
