The 74F181SPC, part of the popular 74F series of advanced high-speed CMOS logic ICs, is a 4-bit Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) with an on-chip 8-bit accumulator. The chip can perform parallel 8-bit arithmetical and logic operations on two words stored in its working registers. It is logic overloaded, making it ideal for a variety of applications, including the control of various types of data acquisition and processing systems, embedded controller designs and PLCs.

The 74F181SPC has two 16-bit working registers in which two 8-bit words or two 4-bit words can be stored. The ALU accepts these two words, plus anoperation select code, and performs an arithmetic or logic operation according to the code. The output (4 bits) of the ALU is latched for output or stored in the accumulator. The output of the ALU can then be used as input for a subsequent operation.

The output of the ALU can also be directly gated to the output latch of the chip, bypassing the accumulator.
