74HC125D Application Field and Working Principle
74HC125D is a high speed CMOS logic device from 74HC logic family. It is a 4-line buffer/driver, capable of running at very high speeds (tPD = 0.35 ns/1.5 ns) with guaranteed AC and DC characteristics. It is provided with two gates per buffer, and can be used as two separate two-channel buffers or four single-channel buffers with independent control of each. Its low power consumption makes it suitable for low-power applications, such as portable electronics, consumer applications and telecommunication.
The 74HC125D can be categorized as a Logic - Buffers, Drivers, Receivers, Transceivers. The main purpose of the device is to enable interfacing of different logic families, such as TTL/CMOS/ECL. As a 4-channel buffer/driver, it can drive, transmit and receive data between two different types of logic. This enables the user to combine the advantages of different technologies for further optimization of their circuit.
The 74HC125D operates on the CMOS voltage range of 3 - 12V max, for both inputs and outputs, resulting in an overall extremely low power consumption and wide operating range. The device also has an open drain architecture and can be enabled or disabled with a single input line. The device also has very high noise immunity (up to ESD and latch-up) and can operate at temperature between -40 to +125 C. It is also provided with Schmitt triggers with hysteresis at selectable levels of 2V and 4V.
The working principle of the 74HC125D is fairly simple. The 4-channel logic buffer/driver consists of two gates, with each gate consisting of two transistors- one P-channel, and one N-channel MOSFET. When the input is low, the P-channel is turned off, while the N-channel is turned on. This results in the output being high, thus passing the data through. Conversely, when the input is high, the P-channel is turned on and the N-Channel is turned off, thus passing a low to the output.
In addition to the above, the device can also be used as a differential transistor logic (DTL) driver to provide a ground-referenced logic voltage from the logic device to a larger component. This allows for the use of multiple voltage supplies in the same system. The 74HC125D can also be used as a low-speed multiplexer/switch to control multiple parallel inputs/outputs.
