LOGIC - SHIFT REGISTERS
Shift registers are electronic circuits that store a number of bits in a series and output them in sequence at a given rate. The 74HC595PW is, in particular, an 8-bit serial-in/serial or parallel-out shift register with output latches and an SPI (Serial/Parallel Interface). With its inherent reversible storage, the 74HC595PW is a powerful tool in the field of logic device operation and data transfer.
The 74HC595PW is a general purpose 8-bit shift register, commonly used in the world of digital logic to manipulate data and create patterns. The 74HC595PW is able to store 8 bits of data and output them either in parallel or serial form. The output pins are, in order, Q7-Q0. When the data is designated to the input pin ‘DS’ and the Shift Register Clock Input (‘STH’) is triggered by a pulse, the data is stored into the shift register and shifted up one bit, ready for next clock pulses. This behaviour can be used to produce a logical counter.
The stored data can be shifted out of the register by pulsing theClock SHL pin. This is done to avoid continuous collection of the data. In order for the outputted data to be read, the Output Enable (OE) pin needs to be supplied a logical high (1), otherwise the 74HC595PW will be suppressed from outputting anything. The Master Reset (MR) pin is used to reset the state of the register, i.e. resetting each bit to its default value of 0.
The serial form of outputting data from the 74HC595PW can be used to cascade several registers together in order to achieve a greater scale of data storage. This ‘daisy-chain’ or ‘ripple’ effect of the serial data output is where the Data Input (DS) is connected to the Output Q7 of the preceding register, allowing a greater number of register outputs with lesser pins. This mechanism helps in saving pins on complicated projects.
The 74HC595PW can also be used in robotics where data can be read in parallel form and interpreted by a microcontroller. Advanced applications include using multiple 74HC595PWs together to expand the number of inputs and outputs for controlling a programmable robotic arm. They can also be used in motor drivers for precise motor control.
