The 74VHC138M is a 3-line to 8-line decoder/demultiplexer which is used to select one of eight active high data outputs based on the binary code of three active low address inputs. It is constructed with CMOS logic which is high speed and low power consumption. This makes it useful in portable equipment applications and is ideal for gating, selecting and buffering signals. With its high noise immunity and wide operating voltage range, it is a better product choice than many of the conventional logic devices such as decade counters, latches and decoders.
The device enables data to be routed from one or two sources to many outputs, allowing transformation of data from one form to multiple forms for storage. This makes in it particularly useful for applications such as computer graphics, video, audio, streaming data applications, and multi-level communications protocols. The 74VHC138M has three active low control inputs labeled A, B, and C. The device decodes the three inputs and generates one of eight active high outputs Y0 to Y7. These outputs are determined by the number of binary combinations available to the three inputs, which is 8 in total. When all the binary bits of the three inputs are 0, Y0 is the only active output. Input A corresponds to the highest binary order; the combination of 000 corresponds to output Y0 and the combination of 111 corresponds to output Y7.The control and data inputs are internally diode-protected against over-voltage conditions, allowing ±30 and ±15V input voltages to be applied without damaging the device.
The working principle of the 74VHC138M can be understood as follows: The three control inputs, A, B and C are applied binary logic ‘zeros’ and ‘ones’. Each of the eight outputs, Y0 through Y7, is selected by the control inputs to represent the eight possible combinations of binary values. When all the binary bits of the three inputs are ‘zeros’, Y0 is the only active output. When all the binary bits of the three inputs are the same, Y1 is the only active output. When the binary bits of the three inputs are different, the output corresponding to the combination of binary values is active.
