Common Mode Chokes (CMC), also known as line filters, are electronic components used to filter out Common Mode (CM) interference from different circuits. CMCs are mainly used in the automotive, medical, aviation, and telecommunication industries. CMC has several different configurations, including ferrite core choke, axial or radial wire-wound chokes, and planar chokes.A CMC works by reducing the amount of current flowing in the Common Mode, which is the sum of the two currents running through two different pathways simultaneously. The CMC redirects the two currents, one through the inductor and one through the switch, thus canceling out the interfering current. In this way, CMCs can protect the internal components of electronic systems from interference, which can damage the electronic components and cause the system to malfunction.The most common type of CMC is the ferrite core choke, which is made up of a ferrite core and two coils wound around it. The ferrite core material has a high electrical impedance, so any signals passing through it are reduced. The two coils wound around the ferrite core are connected to each other and to the electronic device. When the current passes through the coils, the current is inducted. This inductance reduces the amount of current passing through the circuits, which in turn reduces the interference.Another type of Common Mode Choke is the axial or radial wire-wound choke. These are constructed with coils wound around a magnetic core, usually made of iron.
