Common Mode Chokes and their Application Field & Working PrincipleCommon mode chokes (also known as CM chokes) are a type of electrical wiring device commonly used today to reduce electromagnetic interference in AC and DC electrical circuits. The most common application for a CM choke is as a part of EMC shielding for an AC or DC signal circuit, which reduces the amount of transmit and/or receive signal which may be impacted by EMI. Common mode chokes are available in a wide range of sizes and styles to suit different applications.These chokes are generally small in size and relatively inexpensive, making them applicable for many types of circuit protection and signal wiring operations. Typically, they consist of a set of two coils with a ferromagnetic core between them, connected in series. They are designed to create a magnetic field which blocks the AC current or radio frequency radiation from passing between the two coils, thus reducing the noise and interference.The application of a CM choke may be seen in various communications applications such as radio transmitters and receivers, and in applications such as switching power supplies, transformers, converters and motors. Common mode chokes are also found in the automotive industry for various purposes, including to mitigate radio frequency interference. When used for such applications, common mode chokes can prevent undesired radio interference from affecting the car\'s performance.In terms of the working principles of the CM chokes, the first principle is that they work by creating a magnetic field that partitions the current and/or radiation between the two coils in series. This tiny magnetic field acts as a barrier to stop the current from passing between the two coils, thus reducing any interference caused by the current. The other principle is that the distances between the two coils must be kept as short as possible to make sure that the resistance of the magnetic field is kept to a minimum.Finally, the working principles of a CM choke also involve utilizing high-frequency components along with the induction internal magnetic field. This ensures that the chokes have an extended frequency range, which enables them to handle a wide range of frequencies. This is especially important in radio frequency applications and other signal wiring applications where the frequencies are likely to be wide and varied.Common mode chokes are highly reliable and highly effective in reducing EMI from AC and DC powered signals or radio frequency radiation.
