When the high voltage is applied, the gas is ionized and electrons in the gas travel from the cathode to the anode. As the electrons hit the plate on the anode, they create photons of light. The color of the light emitted depends on the gas inside the tube. Common colors include red, yellow, blue, green, and orange. Neon lamps have a long lifetime compared to incandescent lamps and are mostly used for decorative lighting since they produce a colorful and attractive light. Neon lamps are also energy-efficient since they produce a lot of light with only a low amount of electricity.
