Working Principle

A few tantalum capacitors will usually use an anode structure composed of a coated metal microporous core, while larger capacitance ratings are made with an anode composed of two microporous layers. When a potential is applied to one of the capacitor’s electrodes, current flows from the other electrode, charging the capacitor’s anode.

The ceramic layer on the anode further improves the capacitance rating of the device by providing a stable dielectric layer. The metal anode core stores the charge that comes from the applied potential. This increase in charge also increases the capacitance rating. The combination of the anode and cathode, along with the dielectric layer, forms a capacitor.
