Plasma arc cutting (also referred to as PAC) is a thermal cutting process used to cut through material via the use of an accelerated jet of hot plasma. This process can be utilized on a variety of metals which contain varying amounts of electrical conductivity. Plasma arc cutting has been found to be useful for both industrial and hobbyist applications, making it an easily accessible resource for a range of people.
PAC is typically composed of two main components: an electrically conductive gas as well as a plasma arc. The plasma arc is created through the coupling of a power supply and a pressurized gas, creating a consistent temperature and pressure which allows for a consistent, reliable cut. Generally, the power supply is configured to produce a high-temperature arc, and pressurized gases (such as argon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, helium, and mixtures of them) are added to the arc to allow the process to occur. The power supply is what gives the arc its acuity and allows for a concentrated heat source, allowing the material to be cut quickly and accurately.
The material being cut is placed between the plasma arc and an electrode (known as the cathode) which provides a negative voltage between them. This voltage causes electrons to flow from the arc to the material, creating a localized heat source as they travel. This localized heat source breaks the molecular bonds of the material, resulting in the melting away of the material. As the molten material is dissipated, an inert gas (such as argon or nitrogen) is used to blow away the debris, leaving behind a clean cut.
PAC has many advantages over other cutting processes, such as traditional oxy-fuel cutting. PAC is more efficient as it allows for quick cutting speeds and highly accurate cuts, which can produce tucked or beveled edges. It also provides better quality cuts, as it produces nearly no slag residue or distortion to the material. Additionally, PAC is better suited for thicker materials, as it can cut through materials up to 2 inches thick without being affected by the increasing heat.
