When an external force is applied to the lever of the switch, the arm is pulled, which then activates the switch contact mechanism. In normal operation, the switch contact remains off until the lever is activated again, while in latching operation, the switch contact remains in the last state reached until manually reset.

The lever of the switch is usually connected to a mounting plate, which can be adjusted to cause a desired action. Typically, a gravity force is applicable to the system, so as to move the arm into either an opened or a closed state. When the external force applied to the lever is greater than the pre-determined force, the contact changes, allowing the signal to pass.
