Snap Action, Limit Switches
Snap action limit switches are electromechanical equipment used to detect when a set threshold has been reached in a mechanical system. They are commonly used to limit the travel of a machine\'s mechanical parts, as well as to detect when a specific point in a process has been reached. The snap action switch is also known as a snap switch and makes use of a metal plunger that is normally closed and energised. When the device reaches its limit, the metal plunger will snap into an open position, releasing the contacts and preventing further travel of the machine.
The snap-action switch is an electrical switch which has countless applications across various fields. These switches are primarily used in systems that require a very quick response time due to their ability to switch on and off in less than one second. They can provide feedback about the system or process in terms of energy and torque. Also, due to their low-level operating current, they can be triggered by various input sources from thermocouplers, pressure and flow sensors to contact-less proximity sensors.
In applications such as vehicle testing, snap-action limit switches are used to detect the end of travel of a test item such as a steering column and to provide an instantaneous response. Additionally, the snap switch contact through a mechanical force lower than 3N can generate an action that is quick enough to follow the motions and precisely detect the position of the object.
For industrial purposes and automation tasks, snap-action limit switches are used to detect and control end-of-travel and start-of-travel points in various industrial machines. In this application, the limit switch is equipped with a set of reed switches and will sense the presence of a magnetic field for the switch to move. Whenever the mobile part or element with the magnet installed is positioned within the reed switch sensor, the contacts of the switch are snapped open. This is to signal the system of the presence of the limit switch.
The snap-action limit switch has considerable advantages when used compared to other similar switching systems such as the toggle and push-button switches. These advantages include its fast respon time, low-leveling of operating current and the ability to withstand sudden changes in temperatures, vibrations and shocks better than others.
