These switches include two or more antennas that emit radiofrequency signals, which activate a transponder located on the object being detected. When the transponder is activated, it sends a signal back to the antennas, which in turn closes the contact closure. Generally, these switches are used in more modern industrial applications.

The working principle of a limit switch is fairly simple. When the actuating element, be it mechanical, optical, proximity, or RFID enabled, is moved, it causes the contact closures to open or close, thus activating the switch. This activation is what causes a specific action to take place, depending on the circuitry connected to the switch.
