Snap Action, Limit Switches
Snap action limit switches are mechanical devices that are used to determine the position and direction of an object or component of a machine. They are also referred to as \'limit switches\', because they are usually used to set limits or boundaries on the movement of an object or item. A typical snap action limit switch consists of a metal body with a contact plated inside the body. The contact will have either normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) contacts that are interrupted when the switch is tripped.
Snap action limit switches are used in many applications, including but not limited to: motor controllers, industrial machinery, and automated systems. They are often used for safety purposes to shut down a system if a critical limit is exceeded, or to activate a warning light or alarm if the limit is exceeded. They are also used to control the operation of machinery or processes, such as starting and stopping a motor, controlling the speed of a conveyor belt, or opening and closing valves on a hydraulic or pneumatic system. Limit switches are also used in sensing applications where they provide accurate positional information, or act as a limit to prevent damage or wear.
Working Principle
The basic principle of a snap-action limit switch is that it is mechanically actuated by an external force. This force will typically be in the form of a lever, cam, or plunger, and will cause the switch to move from a locked position to an unlocked position. As the switch moves to the new position, it will interrupt or complete the circuit of the connected electrical contacts it contains, thereby changing the state of the current. This type of switching action provides an efficient and reliable way to control circuits and electrical devices, as it can be easily actuated and easily reset if needed.
The action of a limit switch is dependent on its design. For example, snap-action limit switches use a ‘snap’ action principle, which means that when the actuator is moved past a certain point, the switch will snap into the opposite position, quickly turning the circuit on and off. This type of design is often used in applications where a very fast response is needed, such as in motor controllers. Another type of limit switch is known as a ‘lever style’ limit switch, which has a longer and more gradual action. This type of switch is ideal for applications where slow and accurate operation is needed, such as in conveyor systems.
No matter which type of limit switch is used, all of them work by providing an electrical current or signal to an electrical device when the switch is tripped or actuated. This allows the connected device to know when a limit has been exceeded, enabling it to respond accordingly. In addition to acting as a signal, limit switches can also be used to control or influence the operation of a device. For instance, they can be used to start and stop motors, open and close valves, or regulate the speed of conveyor belts.
Limit switches can be made from different materials, such as stainless steel, plastic, or zinc. They are available in a wide range of styles, shapes, and sizes, and are available in both AC and DC versions to suit different applications. Snap-action limit switches can be used in both indoor and outdoor environments, in a variety of temperatures, and in both fixed and mobile applications.
The use of snap-action limit switches is an important element in many industrial and commercial applications, providing an accurate and reliable means for monitoring and controlling motion, position, and speed. They are easy to install and reliably maintain, and are an important component in usually automated systems.
