Snap action and limit switches are essential components in all kinds of electronic engineering, automation and process control systems. Their application field and working principle are very important for designers, operators and maintenance personnel to grasp and utilize these devices, since potential failure of these components can cause significant commercial and operational losses. Snap action switches are a type of devices which function is to interrupt, redirect or establish an electrical circuit. In general, snap action switches are robust and reliable devices that are designed for repetitive use in a wide range of temperatures, humidity and conditions. Generally, snap action switches comprise of a contact unit and an actuator which upon closing or opening (depending on the switch model) activate a mechanism that produce a “snap” type sound. A example of snap action switch is a “microswitch”, which is a small, snap-action switch that detects actuation caused by movement of a mechanical device (such as a rocking arm) and will result in a brief connection of the electrical contacts.Unlike the snap action switches, the limit switch is a device which senses the presence or absence of an object in an area and can be used to shut off a system in the event of abnormally high or low temperatures. A limit switch typically comprises of a contact arm and plunger or a multiple contact assembly and a cam or roller actuator. The limit switch is usually composed of two parts: the stationary body portion, which is also known as the “housing” and the spring-loaded armature, which is also referred to as the “armature”. When an object is within the predetermined area, the armature is pushed against the contact arm, thus causing it to “snap” open, triggering the limit switch.Typical applications of snap action and limit switches include switches used in industrial automation, such as process control systems, HVAC systems, automotive, lighting and electrical appliances. These switches can also be used in telecom networks, security and emergency systems, high-voltage systems, transportation and emergency warning systems. Other possible uses include switches for door interlocks, limit switches for positioning and handling equipment, high-voltage switching applications and switches for safety and emergency systems. Apart from the applications of snap action and limit switches, their working principles are also very important to understand and operate properly. In a snap action switch, the contact is normally closed, but upon actuation, the contact separates and stays open until released. A limit switch usually maintains closed contact when subjected to manual actuation or mechanical triggering. The contact remains open until reset manually or by an external resetting device. In summary, the application field and working principle of snap action and limit switches are essential components in all kinds of electronic engineering, automation and process control applications. They perform critical functions and require proper understanding, maintenance and installation as they can produce serious commercial losses if they are not handled and operated properly. The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
