Snap Action, Limit Switches

Snap action, limit switches, also known as snap action switches or limit switch, are electromechanical switches. The most common type of limit switches use a spring-loaded plunger to open or close an electrical circuit when a predetermined physical position is reached. They are used to detect a physical presence or the physical position of an object and are usually activated by pushing the actuator. When a predetermined physical position is reached, the limit switch will be activated. The actuator will push the contact assembly, and the resulting electrical current will then open or close the electrical circuit. This contact assembly is the same as any other switch found in a circuit, providing on and off control.

When installed in its appropriate application, the snap action, limit switch is typically used to trigger an alarm or other warning when a certain position is reached. For example, it would be used in medical equipment or robotics to detect if a person has moved past a safety limit, or a piece of equipment has reached a certain point in an operation.

In automotive and transportation applications, the snap action, limit switch can be used to detect if a car door is closed, or if the train has reached a desired stop. In household appliances, such as ovens or refrigerators, the switch can be used to detect when the temperature or humidity has reached a desired level, signaling for the appliance to turn off.
