A typical switch includes a housing, an actuator, an armature and a contact. The housing and armature are constructed from insulating materials, such as stainless steel, aluminum, or plastic. These materials are also used in the design of the actuator, contact, and other components.When activated, the armature of a limit switch closes the contacts, which then energizes the circuit and triggers an action, such as the activation of a motor or the display of a signal. Once the contacts are closed, they can remain in that state until the switch is triggered to release them, at which point the circuit is de-energized.There are two fundamental families of limit switches: mechanical and electrical.
