8402010644, or “840” as it’s commonly referred to, is an all-in-one contact type that combines fingerstock, contacts, and gaskets into a single device. It’s primarily used as a solution for electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) shielding. By providing a combination of both electrical insulation and mechanical protection, often in a single unit, 840 greatly simplifies the installation as well as the overall cost of its implementation.
As far as application fields go, 840 is commonly used in the defense, communications, medical, and IT industries, just to name a few. In fact, it is widely accepted in multiple standardizations such as the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) and the USB 3.0 interface. With increasing electromagnetic transmission of modern day electronics, the need for effective EMI and RFI shielding has become very critical. This therefore gives 840 a great advantage over its peers.
So how does it work? Well at the most basic level, the idea behind the 840 is to keep the EMI and RFI from entering a housing or enclosure while still allowing the signal to pass freely between two isolated points. The way it does this is primarily through the contact pin design. There are three integral parts of the contact pin, the fingerstock which acts as both an electrical and mechanical connector, the contact which provides the electrical contact, and the gasket which provides EMI and RFI shielding. The combination of these three parts in a single contact allows for the creation of a very low resistance electrical connection while still providing effective EMI and RFI shielding.
The contact itself is essentially a copper plated contact which is attached to the fingerstock. This allows for a high electrical connection and low contact resistance. The contact is also designed to be self-adjusting which helps to compensate for any tolerance mismatches between the mating surfaces. This also reduces the need for special contact designs as the contact can accommodate minor design changes with little to no impact on the overall performance.
The fingerstock provides the mechanical connection between the contact and the gasket. It also provides an integral strain relief connector to the contact which ensures a good connection even if the contact is slightly misaligned. The fingerstock also contains two locking tabs which secure the contact to the fingerstock and give it a solid and secure connection. Additionally, the fingerstock is designed to be flexible which allows it to provide a low profile and ensure proper alignment between the contact and the gasket.
The gasket is the last part of the contact and provides the essential EMI and RFI shielding. The gasket is usually made of either an EMI/RFI material or a combination of copper and ferrite material. The material used depends on the application and the type of shielding required. The gasket provides a barrier to effectively reduce the EMI/RFI between the two contacts and ensure compliance to all applicable standards.
