Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of capacitor that is made from an aluminum foil with an insulating oxide layer that acts as the dielectric. The aluminum foil is usually coated with an organic material to form the anode and a carbon-based material to form the cathode. The capacitor is typically produced by winding two aluminum foil plates together with the dielectric layer between them, with the ends of the foil plates connected by electrical connections.
The aluminum-oxide dielectric layer that forms on the aluminum foil transcends conventional dielectric materials due to its higher breakdown voltage and higher capacitance per unit volume. This makes aluminum electrolytic capacitors particularly useful in high voltage applications.
The most common application of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is in the power supply systems of computers, pulsed AC and DC power supplies, television power supplies, and various other DC-AC, AC-DC, and DC-DC converters. Additional applications include lighting and output filters in radio, power supplies such as inverters, emergency power backups, and transport systems such as automotive and aerospace systems.
The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on the fact that current will flow through a capacitor in proportion to the voltage that is applied across its terminals. This property is known as Ohm’s Law and is used to transfer energy from one source to a different source when a specific voltage is applied across the terminal of a capacitor.
The current flowing through the capacitor will depend on the capacitance (C), voltage dropped across the capacitor (V) and resistance (R) of the circuit. The capacitor acts as a resistor in series with the resistance. As the voltage is increased across the terminals, current also increases and this current is used to charge the capacitor. When the circuit is disconnected, the charge held by the capacitor will be retained until discharged.
This property of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is highly utilized in power supply systems where they provide the filtering of AC power and regulate the output voltage to obtain a DC output voltage. The capacitors are able to hold the charge and then discharge it when a voltage spike is encountered, preventing system damage.
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are also useful in filtering AC-DC converters. Here, the capacitor forms part of an RC (resistor and capacitor) filter or an LC (inductor and capacitor) filter. A capacitor is placed in series between an inductor and the load in order to control the flow of current. The energy stored in the capacitor determines the current that flows through the inductor and hence the output voltage. This type of filter is commonly used to eliminate AC ripple from the DC output of the converter.
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are also used in a wide variety of other applications, including signal conditioning and filtering, audio applications, surge suppression, RF amplifiers, and for storing electric energy for various applications.
