Reed Relays

Reed relays are electromechanical switches used whenever the electrical isolation of one circuit from another is required, or when long life and reliability are important. This type of relay is economical, fast-acting, and suitable for both AC and DC switching. This makes them suitable for a variety of applications. The reed relay is an electromagnetic relay whose switching contacts are located in two spring-like metal strips known as reeds. It has two main components, an electromagnet and the reeds. When the electromagnet is energized, it attracts the reeds towards it. This action triggers the switch and the contact closes. Since reed relays are fragile and delicate, they are available in a variety of sizes. Depending on their applications, they can be used to switch up to thousands of amps or control tiny currents.

Principle of Operation

Reed relays are controlled by a magnet. When an electric current is passed through the electromagnet, it generates a magnetic field which attracts the metallic reeds towards the electromagnet, thus completing the circuit. The reeds in the reed relay use spring tensions to keep the contacts open even when the relay is not activated. When the electromagnet is turned off, the spring tensions come back into action and the reed return to their original state. In the past, reed relays were mainly used as remote control devices, but today they are used for many other applications, such as test instruments, industrial control systems, and communication circuits.

Advantages of Reed Relays

Reed relays offer several advantages over other types of relays such as:

  • They are reliable and offer long life performance.
  • They are accurate and offer high switching speed.
  • They are small and lightweight.
  • They don’t produce electrical noise.
  • They are easy to install and maintain.
  • They can be used for both AC and DC switching.

Applications of Reed Relays

Reed relays can be used in a wide range of applications, such as:

  • Telecommunications: They are used in telephone switching systems as well as in analog and digital signals.
  • Industrial Control: They are used in industrial automation and control systems for controlling motors and other electrical and electronic devices.
  • Automotive: Reed relays are used in automotive applications, such as headlight dimmers and starter systems.
  • Consumer Electronics: Reed relays are used in a variety of consumer electronics, such as digital cameras and cell phones.
  • Aerospace: Reed relays are used in aerospace applications for instrumentation and other specialized equipment.
  • Test Instruments: Reed relays are used in test instruments such as oscilloscopes.

Conclusion

Reed relays are a reliable, fast-acting, and economical electromechanical switch used in a variety of applications. These advantages make it a great choice for a wide range of applications. They are suitable for both AC and DC switching, and are especially beneficial for telecommunication, industrial control, automotive, consumer electronics, aerospace, and test instrumentation.
