The 93C56A-E/SN is a commonly used EEPROM device that works as a slow-access, non-volatile memory. It operates similarly to a generic Non-Volatile RAM (NVRAM) device, with the same speed and capacity as common RAM, only that it can retain its contents even when powered off. It is a small 8K x 16bit device, with a single address bus, that helps provide a simple way of implementing non-volatile memory.Unlike other types of non-volatile memory, such as ROM, the 93C56A-E/SN has a large writing cycle that can withstand 200,000 write operations. Furthermore, it is well suited for applications where frequent write cycles are required, such as small embedded systems that store the system data via serial port.The 93C56A-E/SN is mainly used in applications such as portable computers, small embedded systems, and instrumentation. It is also used for data logging, code storage and in applications where rapid access to data is required. It is also used in aerospace, automotive, and industrial control applications.The 93C56A-E/SN provides a true address bus of 16 bits, making use of a single address line with address signals A0-A7 and A8-A15. It also has two Data buses of 8 bits, making use of two data lines with data signals D0-D7 and D8-D15.The data is read/written to the 93C56A-E/SN through a series of instructions which includes, Read, Write and Unlock. The Read instruction is used when data readback is required. The Write instruction is used to write data to the 93C56A-E/SN. In both instances the data written/read from the 93C56A-E/SN can be either 8 bit or 16 bit.The Unlock instruction is used to unlock the 93C56A-E/SN for writing and is followed by a write command. This is known as a “write enable”. After it has been unlocked for writing, the 93C56A-E/SN is ready to accept data from the data lines.The 93C56A-E/SN also supports a Read ID command which returns a preprogrammed identification code (usually the manufacturers ID) stored in the 93C56A-E/SN, thus ensuring that the device is authentic.The 93C56A-E/SN’s working principle is based on the fact that the data stored in it is retained even when the device is powered off. This is done by allowing the device to generate a low power “Write Protect” signal that prevents the data stored in the device from being altered when it is not powered.Other features of the 93C56A-E/SN include an internal address latch, allowing it to accept address information from the address bus, and an internal control circuit, allowing it to accept control signals from the control bus. The 93C56A-E/SN also provides a data output that allows for data to be read from the device without having to utilize the external data lines.With these features, the 93C56A-E/SN provides a powerful, simple and cost effective solution to implementing non-volatile memory in embedded systems.
