Magnetic sensors have become increasingly developed in many applications. Specifically, solid state magnetic switches are increasingly used in automotive powertrain, security systems, off-highway and military vehicles and even household appliances. The solid state magnetic switch, A1155LUBTN-T, is a brand new product developed by Siemens AG. It can detect changes in magnetic field for applications such as detection of motion, door position and current/voltage sensing. In this article, the application field and working principle of model A1155LUBTN-T will be discussed.
A1155LUBTN-T provides two types of output. The first type is an open collector output where the switch is open when an external magnet is not present, and the second, a latching output which changes state when an external magnet is present and remains in that state until the magnet is removed. The A1155LUBTN-T is a Hall-effect solid state switch with a wide operating range, from -40°C to + 85°C. It has a guaranteed maximum on-state resistance of 0.5 Ω and off-state leakage current of 0.02 mA. The device has an operating voltage up to 18 V and the output supply current is 40 mA.
Model A1155LUBTN-T has wide application fields. It can be used as door position switch, to control locking/unlocking system in cars, in starter control systems, as a current and voltage sensing in transformers and various other applications. Its application in load-sensing in vehicles can also be seen. This device can measure the current that is present in the load and transmit the information to the relevant controllers. The solid state Hall-effect switch is also used in fuel-level sensing, to sense the critical fuel level in an automobile.
The working principle of A1155LUBTN-T is based on the Hall effect. This is a phenomenon discovered by Edwin Hall in 1879, when he found that when a current flows through a conductor, a magnetic field is created which exerts a force on the free electrons in the conductor. This force causes the electrons to move in a direction perpendicular to the applied magnetic field. This motion creates an electric field which opposes the applied field, which is known as the Hall effect.
The A1155LUBTN-T is designed to measure changes in magnetic field. It integrates a Hall plate on the surface of its die, with detector terminals connected to the Hall circuit on the chip. Thus, it produces an electric current measured at microamps, when a magnetic field is applied. Depending on the strength of the field, the output will be either low (OFF state) or high (ON state). In addition, the device also features two operating terminals for latching output, where the output can remain OFF or ON when the external magnet is not present.
