ACT8893 is a high-performance single-chip power management IC (PMIC) that supports energy-saving structures and security designs. It is mainly used for notebook/desktop systems, digital TV/monitor system, personal device power management, communications power management and other power management systems. The ACT8893 is manufactured using TSMC\'s advanced process and features an integrated synchronous voltage regulator, dc-dc controller, non-overlapping power switch, phase-shifted full bridge controller, low-battery detector, reset IC and advanced protection circuit.
The working principle of the ACT8893 is to provide power conversion between a higher external DC voltage and one or more lower, regulated internal voltages. This power conversion process is performed using synchronous buck topology – a technique that converts voltage using a synchronous rectifier. This is done by alternating the switching times of two insulated power switches. The two power switches are physically constructed from metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET’s). When an electric current passes through a MOSFET, it switches on, allowing current to flow between its two source and drain terminals.
The ACT8893 is essentially a digital control loop integrated into an analog power system. This integrated control loop uses a digital pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal to control the two power switches. The digital PWM signal is generated by a digital controller – essentially a high-speed microprocessor. This microprocessor can be programmed with information such as the required output voltage, target output current and protection thresholds.
The ACT8893 is essentially a single-chip power manager. It combines multiple functional modules such as a voltage regulator, dc-dc controller, non-overlapping power switch, phase-shifted full bridge controller, low-battery detector, and reset IC. This allows the ACT8893 to support multiple power management systems in one device. From a usability perspective, this single-chip solution is far easier than using multiple chip solutions. Furthermore, the microprocessor-based digital control allows the output voltage and current to be precisely controlled with far greater accuracy and reliability than analog control systems.
