PMIC - RMS to DC Converters: AD536AJD Application Field and Working Principle
The Analog Devices AD536AJD is a monolithic integrated circuit (IC) that acts as an RMS-to-DC converter and is an essential part of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs). This high performance converter was built using the Analog Devices’s advanced CMOS technology and is suitable for gaining DC power from AC sources in systems such as power supplies, electric vehicles, renewable energy, and medical equipment.In electric systems, the amplitudes of input signals are usually delivered as an AC ripple. The RMS-to-DC converter is used to rectify this AC ripple into a steady DC voltage. This process is called rectification. The RMS-to-DC converter acts as a bridge by rectifying the AC ripple into a clean DC signal. This output allows the DC load to power up.The AD536AJD is a current-mode, fast-response RMS-to-DC converter. This converter also has an ultra-low power consumption of 35µA per channel. The device contains two independent channels. It is designed to obtain a steady DC voltage from an AC ripple with a voltage range from 0V-36V. The AD536AJD comes internally compensated, and the output can be trimmed to a specific DC voltage requirement. The device has the advantage of providing a high accuracy of about 0.4%, a response time of about 4.2 μs and an ultra-low noise output signal.The IC has two input terminals - the input and reference terminals. The AD536AJD can be powered with single supply or dual supplies. The device has an over-voltage lockout feature. When the voltage exceeds the maximum level, the signal is automatically disabled and the module halts its operation.For greater accuracy and higher power supply rejection, the AD536AJD features a temperature-compensated reference voltage generator. This voltage regulates a voltage-controlled current source. The current source is connected to two other inputs - the signal and reference inputs. The signal and reference inputs are connected to the low-pass filter. The filter generates an output voltage proportional to the true or average output AC signal.The current source is also connected to a voltage-to-current converter and a level-shifter. These two components are connected to a multiplier, which performs the multiplication of the current of the voltage-to-current converter with the signal voltage of the level-shifter. Finally, the multiplier is connected to the output, which is the DC output of the AD536AJD.Overall, the AD536AJD is a highly-effective RMS-to-DC converter designed to improve the efficiency of electric systems.
