The AD5421CREZ-RL is a 16-bit, nanoDAC resolution, low power, voltage output digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that operates from a 2.7 V to 5.5 V power supply. Used in applications such as instrumentation, motor control, medical imaging, temperature control and signal modulation, the AD5421CREZ-RL offers excellent performance, small size and low power consumption, making it a useful component to integrate into many different applications.
The voltage output range of the AD5421CREZ-RL is adjustable between 0.5 V to 3.3 V and the maximum output voltage can be adjusted from 0 to 4.096 V. The device operates with a logic supply voltage of 2.7 V to 5.5 V with a single power supply. It has two calibration pins that provide the ability to trim both the full-scale output voltage and the zero-scale voltage. The AD5421CREZ-RL is available in an SOIC-8 package.
The operating temperature range of the AD5421CREZ-RL is -40°C to +125°C. It has an extended shutdown feature that reduces the current consumption to 0.2 μA. IE function allows the AD5421CREZ-RL to be used as an adjustable current sink for circuit test, with a maximum adjustable current control of ±20 μA.
The AD5421CREZ-RL is based on the charge-redistribution architecture, which provides two major benefits over earlier converter architectures. First, the charge-redistribution process is able to achieve both excellent linearity and low noise simultaneously. Secondly, since the converter requires no switch cells, the device can work with a very low operating power.
Typically, a current steering DAC may use an R-2R resistor network to achieve digital to analog conversion. But in the AD5421CREZ-RL, the Charge Redistribution architecture is used. It consists of a series of capacitors connected between the output and the reference voltage. The charge on each capacitor has a digital value of one. A digital value of zero or one is sent to the chip which adds or subtracts charge to certain capacitors, thus changing the analog voltage at the output.
The digital inputs of the AD5421CREZ-RL are compliant with both SPI and I2C serial protocols. The device has three input modes: power-on reset, software reset and low-power shutdown. The device is also equipped with power-on reset (POR) function to ensure that the power supply voltage is above the minimum level for normal operations.
In addition to its voltage output, the AD5421CREZ-RL also provides an adjustable current output which can be used for circuit testing. The current output range is adjustable between 0 μA to 100 μA. This current output mode has a standard TTL voltage level and can be used with most test and measurement instruments.
The AD5421CREZ-RL is a very low power, high performance, 16-bit resolution digital-to-analog converter that is ideal for applications requiring low power consumption and small size packages. It provides excellent linearity and low noise performance and is operable over a wide temperature range.
