Data Acquisition has been an ongoing demand in variety of areas with applications that have been changing and developing over the years, and the Analog to Digital Conversion (ADC) plays a major role in these data acquisition processes. The AD7685CCPZ-R2 from Analog Devices, Inc. is an 8-bit, ±10 V input, 8-Channel simultaneous sampling, low-power SAR ADC, which offers high accuracy and high-speed conversion for a range of data acquisition applications.
The simplified generic block diagram of the AD7685CCPZ-R2 is shown in the figure below. This device uses a Successive Approximation (SAR) ADC which consists of a comparator, a DAC, a SAR logic and a 2.5 V reference. The analog input is applied to the input multiplexer where it is routed to the differential amplifier. The differential amplifier is responsible for amplifying the input signal usually to double the power. The output of the differential amplifier is applied to the input of the comparator which is also fed with a reference voltage provided by the internal 2.5 V reference. Depending on the comparison output of the comparator, the SAR logic adjusts the output of the DAC, to bring it closer to the input. Then the SAR ADC then generates the digital output.
The AD7685CCPZ-R2 has achieved very good performance in terms of noise and offset performance, as well as a wide range of supportable inputs. The device has 8-bit resolution and 8 programmable input channels and supports an input voltage range from ±10 V. It also includes an internal reference and TemperatureTracker digital thermometer. These features make this device very suitable for a variety of acquisition applications such as data logging, industrial automation and machine control, laboratory automation and process control, machine vision and other similar applications.
The deep buffer of the AD7685CCPZ-R2 provides high accuracy and stability in system noise and rejection performance. Besides this, it has an internal clock generator to provide up to 30 kHz sampling rate and up to 12-bit resolution. The device also has an onboard temperature sensor which can be programmed to provide temperature information every 20 ms. Furthermore, with its 8 programmable input channels, it allows to acquire data from multiple sources simultaneously.
In terms of power consumption, the AD7685CCPZ-R2 operates from a single 2.7 V to 5.5 V power supply and consumes 12 mW of power. Moreover, the device employs a new dynamic power-saving technique which helps further reduce the power consumption. This power-saving technique tunes down the clock rate depending on the acquisition requirement, thereby saving on power.
