Data Acquisition - Analog Front End (AFE) subsume devices designed to act as the interface between physical quantities to be measured, and digital systems which analyze the data. AD7730BRU is a member of such family: it is a low-noise, low-power, monolithic data acquisition system.

AD7730BRU hag an analog part, composed of a 24-bit successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a sample and hold (SHA), and an input voltage range selector with up to 16 user-selectable ranges. The device, which is fabricated in an upper performance process, features a small low-noise SHA and a low power consumption. Its differential analog inputs provide superior rejection of common-mode signals and can handle both bipolar and unipolar analog signals, which bring a very wide variety of applicability in systems needing physical parameter acquisition.

The digital part of the device, which is of an OS-level configuration, consists of a low noise 10ppm/°C oscillator, a latency timer, a digital filter, an input channel mux, a 97-cache channel, an AutoCal/GC buffer, an SHA and an ADC adjustment. The ADC adjustment allows for temperature compensation and DMA configured data acquisition. The digital output stage, comprised of a variable output gain and a programmable digital filter, supports both continuous and raw data outputs.

The device supports simultaneous sampling, where a single SHA can serve multiple ADC channels; and has shutdown mode, in which all analog sections are powered by a single supply while the rest of the device is powered off, allowing for extremely low power consumption during sleep mode.

The AD7730BRU has been extensively tested and verified in laboratory tests, and has proven its capability to acquire physical parameters with low noise and high accuracy. Its 24-bit resolution, coupled with its easy to use programming interface and ample features, makes it attractive for use in medical grade applications, such as Automatic Diabetes Monitoring Systems and Patient Monitoring Systems, where data accuracy is of great importance. Other applications include industrial process control, scientific instrumentation and consumer electronics.
