Working Principle

The AD7740KRM-REEL7 converts an unbounded voltage signal into a linearly frequency modulated current-mode signal that is also unbounded in amplitude. The incoming voltage signal is typically 0 to 5 V, however the actual input range is normally ±15V. The resulting pulse width modulated (PWM) signal is then converted from the current-mode to the voltage domain by means of an internal differential resistor network.

The conversion rate for the V/F and F/V functions is determined by the reference voltage present at the REF pin, and can be programmed over the range of 0.5Hz to 500kHz (V/F) and 0.25V to 100V (F/V). The device includes a low power architecture that is optimized to provide high speed operation, while consuming very little power - typically 135mW when operating at the highest frequencies.

The AD7740KRM-REEL7 also includes an internal voltage reference, allowing the reference voltage to be adjusted externally for dynamic control. The voltage reference is also adjustable over the range of 0.2V to 5V. Other features include a power-on reset, programmable gain for the V/F input and an internal sleeve output for the F/V output.
