Working Principle

The AD790JN is a linear comparator that is based on a differential amplifier. It compares the applied voltage levels at its two input pins, and outputs a corresponding voltage level at its output pin.The differential amplifier is essentially composed of two transistors, one p-channel and one n-channel. These transistors are connected in series in such a way that their bases are at the same potential. When voltage at the non-inverting input terminal is more positive than at the inverting input terminal, current will flow from the inverting input to the non-inverting input. This increases the voltage at the output terminal.The differential amplifier is connected with an open-drain output and an external pull-up resistor. This ensures that the output voltage is low for one input being higher than the other and high for the opposite situation.The low input bias current and the high output drive current are both due to the inherent biasing of the differential amplifier. The low voltage is maintained by the use of active clamp circuits to maintain a very low voltage drop across the output pull-up transistor. The active clamp circuits also provide good noise immunity by acting as a source of noise dampening. The device also has an active temperature compensation which ensures that its offset voltage remains constant over temperature.
